15 High Fiber Foods You Should Probably Be Eating

When you hear the word “fiber,” you probably picture one of two things: your grandma’s tasteless bran muffins, or a creepily joyful cartoon sun double-fisting scoops of raisins.

But fiber doesn't have to be bland and boring. There are plenty of fiber-filled foods you’ll enjoy eating.

This is super important, because you’re likely not getting nearly enough fiber. The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics advises that most men try to eat about 38 grams of fiber per day, but most guys only get about 15 grams per day.

How Eating Olive Oil Can Boost Your Memory

You now have one more excellent reason to shelve the store-bought dressing in favor of the homemade stuff: Eating a diet rich in extra-virgin olive oil may protect your brain as you age, researchers from Temple University suggest.

In the study, researchers genetically modified mice to express three key characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease: memory impairment, the buildup of sticky proteins called amyloid plaques, and tangles of tau proteins. Then, when the mice reached six months of age, they had some mice eat chow supplemented with extra-virgin olive for six months, while the others ate their regular food. This food change occurred before the mice began to exhibit signs of Alzheimer’s.

Eating Fruits and Vegetables Could Make You As Happy As Getting a Job

Science has found another reason to eat more fruits and vegetables—eating enough of them could make you a happier person, according to new Australian research.

More than 12,000 people were surveyed twice about how many fruits and vegetables they typically ate—once in 2007, and again in 2009.

During both of those surveys, the subjects also rated their overall life satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10.

Researchers looked at how each person’s fruit and vegetable consumption and happiness changed over those two years, and found that with each extra serving of fruits and vegetables people ate, the happier they felt.

How His Childhood Eating Habits Affect His Boner

As you're probably well aware, there are quite a few reasons why a guy might not be able to get hard. From his relationship with his mom to weird masturbation habits, you might think you've heard it all—but you would be wrong. His erection troubles might also be to blame on how much sugar he ate as a kid, according to a recent study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

For the latest boner-killing study, researchers gave newborn male rats water spiked with different dosages of fructose (the type of sugar found in fruit). The control group drank regular water, a second group drank water with five percent fructose, and the third group drank water with 10 percent fructose. After eight weeks, researchers tested the rats' blood-glucose levels, testosterone levels, and erectile function.

The 12 Easiest Healthy Eating Tips--Ever!

by SHAPE editors
12 A-list experts share their top effortless advice for eating clean, staying energized, and losing weight. And yes, dessert is included!
1. Make room for dessert. "Ditch the all-or-nothing mentality. Instead of being either perfect or off the rails, aim for a realistic balance. For example, if you're craving something carb-rich, like a brownie for dessert, omit the starch from your dinner, but keep the veggies and lean protein. Making room for treats while still eating healthfully overall makes a whole lot more sense than yo-yoing between strict dieting and overindulging." -Cynthia Sass, R.D., author of S.A.S.S.
