One out of every four new erectile dysfunction patients is under 40, according to a recent study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. That’s compared to a 2002 Dutch review that found just 2 percent of younger men suffer from ED.
What explains this apparent spike in bedroom-related blues? Theories range from higher rates of stress to greater honesty in reporting the issue. But some research suggests your online porn habit may also play a role.
“Pornography is inspiring and sexually motivating,” says Ursula Ofman, Psy. D., a New York-based clinical psychologist and sex therapist. But if you masturbate too frequently—especially in the hours before you attempt sex with a partner—your recent orgasms may make it more difficult for you to perform, or may lower your interest in sex, Ofman says.
And for guys who have gone long stretches without having sex, frequent masturbation to porn may also train your brain and body to respond sexually only to very specific types of visual and tactile stimuli, Ofman adds. (Basically, your hand and the images on your computer screen become your sexual triggers.)
If you've been in a dry spell lately, start by switching up your solo sessions. You can actually recondition your brain to perform with a human partner, Ofman says. If you only watch one type of porn, experiment with other options, she advises. And if you always practice the same routine—and concentrate your hand action on the same part of your penis—try to vary that as well. These changes will open your body and brain up to the wider range of sexual sensations and images you’ll experience with a partner, she says.
